The Cathedral is a superb sanctuary that houses a priceless collection of sculptures and paintings from the Quito School of Art. Built in the first half of the 16th century, it now lies at the heart of the Historical Centre. Adorned with arches, a Baroque roof and altar, neoclassical choirs and dazzling façade, the church is singularly unique. The remains of the Independence hero, Mariscal Antonio Jose de Sucre, lie within.
