A symmetrical, neoclassical construction, built along Italian lines, this theatre is a masterpiece of 19th century architecture. The initial construction work began between 1880 and 1887 and was completed by 1922, in time to celebrate the centennial anniversary of the Battle of Pichincha. The result was a tour de force, with a delicately sculpted façade that proudly gazes down on the Plaza del Teatro. It is the most important scenario in the city.
